Illinois was the first to repeal its law, in 1962, and about half the states did so in the 1970s; but this trend came to a halt in the 1980s.

Mohammad Qasim Hashimzai, the Afghan deputy justice minister, said the Taliban spent two months planning the raid and it was their most sophisticated yet. "A massive operation is under way to find the escaped inmates," Hashimzai told the AFP news agency. "None of the escaped inmates have been caught yet," Hashimzai added.
